Groundbreaking Approval for Hemp Seed Meal for Laying Eggs
The U.S. Hemp Roundtable is thrilled to share the exciting news of a major victory for the hemp industry: the tentative approval of Hemp Seed Meal (HSM) for use in the diets of laying hens.
This achievement, which marks a significant milestone in the integration of hemp products into animal feed, is a testament to the tireless efforts of the Hemp Feed Coalition (HFC) and its partners. We also extend a heartfelt gratitude to our long-time advocacy partner, Bill Bookout of the National Animal Supplements Council, for his unwavering support and dedication to advancing this crucial initiative.
After three years of tireless advocacy and rigorous evaluation, the Association of American Feed Control Officials has granted approval for the use of Hemp Seed Meal (HSM) in laying hen feed. This move, approved by 48 states with 2 abstentions, will open new opportunities for farmers across the country, who can now use HSM in up to 20% of their hen diets.
Hemp provides a crop rotation option with lower input needs, enhancing soil health and disease control. It promotes agricultural sustainability and supply chain flexibility, benefiting the entire agricultural community. Hemp is also incredibly nutritious for the hens, offering essential vitamins, minerals, and a complete protein profile, thereby improving egg quality.
Thank you to all advocates in the hemp industry for their work in getting this done. This decision marks a significant step forward for the hemp industry, and we’ll keep you updated on further developments.
