Hemp Needs Your Help in Colorado
Former Congressman Jared Polis was for hemp before hemp was cool. Indeed, there was no Member of Congress who was more supportive of the development of our exciting new industry.
Now that Polis is the Governor of Colorado, he has another opportunity to boost the hemp industry. And if you live or do business in Colorado, he needs to hear from you.
Last month, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) issued proposed industrial hemp regulations intended to improve the regulatory framework for hemp products such as CBD. We applaud the agency’s efforts to promote a strong regulatory regime.
Unfortunately, several aspects of the proposed regulations would add significant burdens to hemp companies, without providing significant value to consumers or added consumer protection benefits. This would result in limited products to consumers, increasing prices, and in the end, will financially disadvantage Colorado farmers. Among other challenges, the proposed regulations would impose:
- Regulatory requirements that are inconsistent with FDA rules;
- Extremely onerous testing requirements, based on Canadian marijuana laws, that would put most hemp businesses out of compliance; and
- Colorado-specific labeling requirements that would confuse consumers while unduly burdening manufacturers.
Nine leading Colorado companies offered comments last week to help address these problematic provisions. Click here to read them.
Now it’s your turn. If you live or do business in Colorado, please use our State Action Center to send an email to the Governor, urging him to work with CDPHE to revise the regulations and make them friendlier to farmers, consumers and businesses.
And if you have the time and the intertest, we encourage you to virtually attend the Colorado Board of Health’s public rule-making hearing this Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at 10 a.m. CT remotely
