Movement in Congress on Permanent Hemp Legalization

U.S. Hemp Roundtable

This week, nearly four dozen Members of the Roundtable hit Capitol Hill, meeting with their U.S. Senators and Representatives, and asking them to co-sponsor S.2667 and HR 5485, the Hemp Farming Act of 2018. As part of this day, our Board of Directors sat down with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to discuss our strategy moving forward. Given that Leader McConnell is a master strategist and legislator – and in the best position to make victory possible – we are following his lead.

The current plan is to try to pass our legislation as an amendment to the 2018 Farm Bill, a must-pass piece of legislation that needs to enacted or extended by September 30 of this year. As discussed in this article, while McConnell is seeking to attach his bill in the Senate, Congressman James Comer (the lead sponsor on HR 5485) is seeking to amend the Farm Bill on the House side. It is critical that there be strong bi-partisan support for Comer’s amendment.

They need our help. In the coming days, we will be announcing some very significant lobbying initiatives to secure passage of this bill. Next week, we will be launching a new web portal that will make it simple for Americans to petition their Members of Congress to co-sponsor the Hemp Farming Act of 2018. The portal is in beta form. Please try it out, and let us know if you have any suggested improvements. This crowd sourcing effort will ensure that once we formally launch this initiative, it can be a success.
