Support CBD Regulation For Our Veterans

This Veterans Day we continue our call to Congress and the FDA — regulate CBD now — on behalf of our nation’s servicemen and servicewomen. There are countless sources and testimonies sharing how hemp-derived CBD products have helped aid active duty and retired military members, yet the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is unable to recommend or prescribe them because of the FDA’s current stance.

According to the VA website —

VA clinicians may only prescribe medications that have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for medical use. At present most products containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD), or other cannabinoids are not approved for this purpose by the FDA.

Our Veterans and military personnel deserve access to safe, effective hemp-derived CBD products, but the lack of regulatory guidance by FDA continues to leave room for “bad actors” that don’t manufacture products according to quality standards. Without the ability to prescribe or recommend CBD products, our Veterans are left to fend for themselves and run the risk of getting a hold of a product that does not meet basic manufacturing and health requirements.

Additionally, our Veterans also deserve economic opportunities posed by the hemp industry. Earlier this year, the VA denied the certification of a Veteran-owned small hemp business under its “Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business” verification program because of the business’s involvement in “products derived from the same genus of plant (cannabis) as marijuana” would amount to “a federal agency endorsing a Schedule I controlled substance.” This is yet another example of the confusion created by an unclear regulatory framework for hemp-derived products as a result of FDA inaction.
