Urge Lawmakers in Iowa to Support Hemp!
In 2019, Iowa passed strong legislation, Senate File 599, that permits the growth of hemp in the state and sanctions the sale of hemp products.
Unfortunately, Iowa officials have argued that due to federal rules, hemp-derived CBD cannot be sold as a food additive or dietary supplement. Indeed, according to the Iowa Department of Health, “CBD products are not legal in the state of Iowa, with few exceptions.”
Local reports are coming from Polk County and Story County that prosecutors and law enforcement are enforcing against possessing and selling CBD products, and officials in Story County have advised that “anyone who possesses illegal CBD products should destroy them immediately.”
In 2020, the Roundtable is supporting efforts to clarify that hemp-derived CBD can be sold at retail to Iowa consumers.
